Creator notes

The San Carlos de la Barra Castle is a Spanish Imperial construction located on the San Carlos Peninsula in Zulia State, Venezuela. It was built in 1623 using limestone brought from Toas Island, at the entrance to the Maracaibo Bar. The fortress was intended to protect the passage connecting Lake Maracaibo with the Gulf of Venezuela. At the time of its construction, Maracaibo had been attacked and sacked several times by pirates, and the castle was built to provide a true defense of the territory, preventing pirates from reaching the mainland.
